2021 brings with it hopes of increased socialising. And with it, new outfits and days to cherish. The long slog of lockdown is close to being over. For over a year, our creativity and proclivity for dressing up has been stifled. We can finally look ahead to celebrating with family and friends. To make sure you’re outfitted in the perfect attire, we’ve put together a list of three trends you need to look out for in 2021.
Loungewear
Everyone has been forced to become homebodies through lockdown. And for many otherwise sociable and gregarious individuals, they’ve had to come to terms with the new reality – living your entire life within the confines of the four walls of your home. This particular set of circumstances may have prompted people to re-evaluate how they dress.
Many people fall into the trap of prioritising form over function. Instead of stiff, inflexible jeans and shirts, more and more of us are neglecting the way we used to dress in favour of comfortable clothes. Plush, cosy tracksuits and big, capacious hoodies are in at the moment. Rather than splashing out on adventurous shoes that look nice but aren’t that comfortable to wear, we’re opting for snug and soft slippers.
We’re predicting that the sartorial lessons learnt from the pandemic will translate into the early months of 2021 and beyond. We’re no longer content with merely looking nice, we want to be comfortable too. We’ve been stuck wearing indoor clothes for almost a year and I think many will struggle to squeeze their way back into the kinds of clothes they used to wear.
Bold and bright colours
Having had all of our freedoms curtailed thanks to the pandemic, we’re predicting that we’ll see an outsized splash of colour this spring and summer. Being able to be out and about socialising with friends, going shopping and, most importantly, going to pubs and nightclubs is going to bring about a dose of happiness and optimism. And what is more likely to great this outpouring of emotion that comes with seeing friends and family again than bright and bold colours. Vogue recently mirrored this point by predicting a rise in psychedelic colour schemes.
Tinted square-framed sunglasses
We’re starting to welcome warmer weather to British shores. And alongside, shorter, skimpier clothes that’ll allow us to show off more skin and absorb the sun’s rays, we’ll also need something to help us shield our eyes from the sun. We saw the rise of the dad cap as the world’s preferred sun defender but we think sunglasses will be back this spring and summer.
The last time we were allowed outside during the summer, tiny sunglasses were all the rage. Today, square frames are likely to be the shape of choice. We’ve also noticed a surge in tinted lenses on catwalks. Clearly inspired by the 1970s, there are set to be plenty of people strutting about in the sun with oversized, tinted sunglasses. Rose, yellow and sepia tones are all in style.
Loungewear, tinted square frame sunglasses and bright colours are just three of many trends you can expect to see this spring and summer. Do you have any predictions for the state of fashion over the coming months? Let us know in the comments.
