A Guide to Choosing Pearls

Thinking about buying yourself pearls? These are a fantastic type of jewellery to own as they are a timeless classic that can turn heads and add both class and style to many different types of outfit.

Pearls are a superb form of jewellery, but it can also be challenging to find the right ones for you as there are so many different options to choose from. Here is a guide which should help you to find the perfect one’s for you.

Size

As you would imagine, the bigger the pearl the more expensive it is when all other factors are equal. Different pearl types are born in different sizes so this should always be a consideration. The four types to consider include:

  • Tahitian pearls
  • Freshwater pearls
  • South sea pearls
  • Saltwater pearls

Lustre

The lustre is the shininess of the pearl with the highest lustre having an amazing inner glow which you will not find with synthetic pearls. There is a lot of value placed on lustre because pearls with high lustre will always look fantastic no matter the size or type of jewellery.

Shape

The shape also plays a big part in the value of a pearl as the rounder it is the more expensive it will be. There are a number of different shapes to choose from, such as drop shape, oval, baroque and button.

Colour

Colour is an important choice but not one which impacts value too much. There should be both an overtone and body-colour so look carefully when shopping for pearl jewel with places like F Hinds being somewhere that has a wide range to choose from.

Surface Quality

The surface quality, or finish, is highly important as there are not many pearls that have a completely smooth and even surface. Unsightly blemishes will bring down the value and should be avoided because they do not look anywhere near as good as pearls with excellent surface quality so you should always buy from reputable sources.

Pearl Care

It is also important to know how to care for your pearl properly so that they continue to look their best. It is important to keep them away from perfume, cleaning products and beauty products so they should always be put on first, taken off last and taken off before doing any housework.

They should be stored in a soft cloth to prevent scratches and cleaned gently either with mild soapy water or with a special cleaning kit.

It can be daunting to find pearls as there are so many different types and considerations to make.

The above are the main decisions that you will need to make along with how much money you have to spend. You should then be able to find beautiful pearl jewellery which looks fantastic and turns heads.
