If you haven’t heard of Fitzroy Island, you must be living under a rock. Or in a cave. For years, Fitzroy Island has been one of the top destinations of both local and foreign tourists in Queensland. So it’s been enjoying fame for quite a time.
Fitzroy Island is a piece of heaven on Earth. It’s easily accessible via 45-minute ferry ride if you’re just in Cairns. It’s also one of the best jump-off points to the world-renowned Great Barrier Reef. No wonder Fitzroy Island is one of the top favourite tourist spots in Tropical North Queensland.
If you’re planning to escape work and everything else this weekend, why don’t you make Fitzroy Island Day Tour Packages the first item on your bucket list?
There are a ton of reasons why you should include the island on your list for your getaway. And here only some of the best ones that we could think of. These are off the top of our heads:
Ideal Location
Fitzroy Island is located within the clear and calm waters of the Great Barrier Reef. In fact, it’s only one of the 900 islands that’s on the reef.
That makes it the ultimate travel destination as it’s only a stone throw away from the Great Barrier Reef and its majestic entirety.
In addition to that, like mentioned above, you can easily get there if you’re coming from Cairns. Just hop on a ferry, and next thing you know, you’re already hopping on the island.
Memorable Adventures on the Sea
The Great Barrier Reef is more than just an insta worthy background for your selfies. A day spent at this World Heritage-listed attraction is certainly one for the books.
You can either go scuba diving or snorkeling to swim with the fish and take pictures of corals, go kayaking, or just witness the beauty underwater through the glass panels at the bottom of your boat.
Make sure to bring your underwater cameras! This way you can record your very first visit to the Great Barrier Reef.
The Island is Haven for Rescued Turtles
You’ll love the island not only for its relaxing environment and stunning scenery but also for the management’s advocacy of taking care of our friends from the wild. Fitzroy Island provides home and care to rescued animals like turtles.
These turtles are given proper attention (and some friendly visits from tourists like you) while they are regaining their strength. Once they are in the pink of health, they are released back to the wild where they truly belong.
The Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is open from 1PM. But since they are always fully booked, make sure to call the office first so you can reserve your slot.
Fitzroy Island is also a National Park
While Fitzroy Island is one, if not the best, jump-off points if you want to explore the Great Barrier Reef, sometimes you don’t even have to leave the island to experience nature.
The island itself is a National Park that’s rich with vegetation, beautiful landscapes, and flora and fauna. It’s also home to a rare and diverse wildlife. You can immerse in the majestic beauty of this island through walking and hiking trails.
Two of the most popular trails that you can take are the Lighthouse Trail and the Summit Trail.
The Lighthouse trail is a track that will lead you to the island’s most visited attraction: the lighthouse. Although it’s not functioning anymore, its vintage charm still doesn't fail to attract tourists.
On the other hand, the Summit Track is a steep hike to the island’s highest vantage point. If you’re an inexperienced hiker, you might want to warm up first because the trail is no joke. But don’t worry, because you’ll be rewarded with the best view of the Reef, neighbouring spots and the entire island when you reach the top.
Still unconvinced? Why don’t you pack your bags now, gas up your tank, drive all the way to Cairns, and see the island for yourself! Trust us, you won’t be disappointed.
