How to Maintain and Clean Your Washing Machine

A washing machine takes on a lot of abuse over the years. Over time, this appliance can become full of dirt, bacteria, and mold, and mildew growth. Proper maintenance is essential for keeping a washing machine operating as it should. Removing the dirt and bacteria involves careful cleaning and maintenance. Homeowners need to know how often to perform these steps so they can keep their washing machine free of dirt.

Signs a Washing Machine Needs Cleaning

When a person throws their laundry in the washing machine, they expect it to be cleaned. Knowing the signs to look for is essential so a homeowner will know if their washing machine needs a deep cleaning. With the following and help from Wash Warrior, individuals will be prepared to keep their washing machine sparkling.

  • Does the washing machine have a foul odor? Unpleasant odors in washing machines are often caused by mold and mildew growth. Unfortunately, these odors will sometimes transfer to clothing that has been washed in the machine.
  • Sometimes, there will be a black, slimy coating around the door edges. This black substance is a mixture of soap scum and dirt. Eventually, it can move from the door edges to the clothing that is being washed.
  • Another sign a washing machine needs to be deep cleaned is marks on clothing. If a person is washing their clothes and they are coming out of the wash with strange marks, it is time to perform a deep clean.

How to Deep Clean a Washing Machine

Deep cleaning a washing machine will keep odors at bay and ensure clothes get clean and smell fresh when they come out of the wash. Ideally, individuals should clean their washing machines every six months. Taking the following steps will help to ensure the washing machine is clean.

Clean the Gasket

Soak a rag in a mixture of half bleach and half water. Make sure to use this mixture to wipe down the door gasket. Wipe within the folds of the gasket and ensure every part is cleaned thoroughly. For those with a top loader machine, use this mixture to clean the metal door.

Clean the Drum

Cleaning and sanitizing the drum is important for keeping bacteria growth under control. For this step, use 1/2 cup of baking soda and a quart of vinegar. Pour these in and run the wash as normal, without any clothing. This can be done once a month to freshen the drum and keep bacteria and mold from growing inside.

Clean the Lint Trap

Many people do not know a washing machine has a lint filter. This filter needs to be rinsed carefully because it can become embedded with lint. Rinsing this filter every six months will keep it working properly.

The above steps should be done at least every six months. Those who use their washing machines frequently may need to clean more often. It never hurts to give a washing machine a little TLC.

Make Cleaning the Washer Routine

Many people do not clean their washers or dryers, and odors can begin to develop. With the steps above, individuals will be able to keep their washing machines clean and fresh so their clothing comes out clean and smelling delightful.

Now is a perfect time to get started on cleaning your washing machine. Odors, dirt, and grime can all wreak havoc on your laundry. With these tips, you will never have to worry about washing machine odors again.
