How to Choose the Right Perfume for Men

Introduction

We all want to be accorded respect and revered by people around us. At work, on the street, at functions, when at home.

The saying goes that you are addressed the way you dress. Well, let me break it to you that the way you smell also attracts or deters people from you.

As a man, you don't want to be labeled for the wrong reasons. Especially by the ladies. Body odor can be one of these reasons.

Your fragrance as a man determines how catchy you are to ladies. Your perfume can make a bold statement about your person.

Your elegance, charisma, confidence, and the way you carry yourself can all be affected by the type of body spray you use.

However, the fragrance best-suited for you can sometimes become a dilemma to select. The goal is to get something that defines your personality and portrays the best version of yourself.

If what you are looking for is a gift for your husband, boyfriend, or dad. There is a suitable fragrance that would help add class to him. Fragrances pass as excellent gifts.

Here are essential tips that you must consider to arrive at that personal scent you desire.

  • Consider Perfume type

The general belief that perfumes are for women, while colognes are for men is not accurate. Both are just terms to differentiate perfume extract concentration in the sprays.

Fragrances come in various perfume concentrations. This is the dividing point for various sprays. We have four categories. We have Parfum, Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Cologne.

Most potent of these is Parfum with perfume concentration ranging from 20 - 30%. This is followed by Eau de Parfum with about 15 - 20%. Then comes, Eau de Toilette with 5 - 15%. And finally, the least of all is Eau de Cologne with 2 - 5%.

These perfume extract concentrations are gotten via dilution with alcohol and water to give the body sprays we buy.

Hence, when you use perfume, it would last longer than cologne. And the amount of perfume you need to use is much smaller than the amount of cologne you would use. It’s that simple.

Nevertheless, as a man, you should consider using less pungent sprays. The best set of men’s fragrance that attracts ladies the most are often less concentrated.

  • Analyze the Scent

Before you go on to pick a spray that suits you, you must perform a test. What do I mean by this?

Every fragrance has three scent notes. These notes evolve progressively, the longer the spray stays on the body. This is why you cannot judge a fragrance by what you perceive at first scent.

The top note is the first-contact aroma. It is usually made from the sweetest and lighter ingredients like citrus and flowers. The middle note lasts longer than the top note, and it is the heart of every fragrance. It comprises extracts from fruits, spices, greens, and other heavier florals.

The longest-lasting note also called the foundational note is what gives the masculine vibes that define men’s fragrance. Most likely unpleasant to the nose on its own, it is composed of woody scents ranging from tobacco to musk, cedarwood, moss, and so on.

So, before you pick a fragrance, do test it by applying it on your wrists or elbows. Then wear it around for a while to monitor how the scent progresses. From there, you can quickly evaluate if it suits you or not.

  • Get trusted brands

A lot of perfume brands perverse the market, no doubt. And the truth is that not all of them offer the quality you want. That is why most people prefer to go with recommendations when it comes to choosing fragrances.

In choosing a fragrance, the brand name suggests the quality you should expect. But remember that these brands have various products. It is therefore imperative that the brand name is not the first criteria for you in choosing a fragrance.

I recommend a few familiar brands that I have tested some of their products — brands like Dolce and Gabbana, Ferragamo, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, and the likes.

The brand only serves as a scheme for quality assurance. Some less famous brands would offer more quality than household names. The only issue is that they have not been tested and trusted.

  • Check your persona

The fragrance you wear has a subtle way of defining your personality. The first thing it does is that people ascribe that signature to you. And for people meeting you for the first time, it is kind of a mark to remember you by.

In a nutshell, the fragrance of your choice has to make a statement about you. If you are the romantic type, you should look for something more floral with scents like lavender, bergamot, jasmine, with a little bit of spice. And for the more broody type, you should consider something with more woody features like tobacco, musk, moss, vetiver, and so on.

Most importantly, your fragrance of choice should ooze originality from you. It must match your natural scent. And not only that, but it should also match your charisma and body language.

Conclusion

Elegance isn't associated only with the clothes you wear or the shoes you put on. How you smell goes a long way in defining how people see you.

I know that with this quick read, you have been able to decide which product suits your personality.

You don't have to choose per se. If you are my type of person, you can garner a collection for yourself and put a definition to every outfit you put on as the occasion demands.
