Being a larger, taller man can come with its pros and cons. Need something from the top shelf? You got it. Need something heavy carrying? Leave it to me. Finding the right fitting clothing though can be a real headache, and leave men feeling frustrated and let down by the lack of choice or just going through the rigmarole of finding clothes that fit. Here, let’s take a look at what larger men can do to make buying clothes, a little less stressful.
-
Choose the Right Colours and Patterns – A little tip – those darker colours, so your blacks, greys, navy and olives can give you a slimming effect when wearing clothes. Clothing with vertical stripes, actually makes you appear taller and leaner, so be sure to keep a few striped shirts in your wardrobe. But not the horizontal type. These will have the opposite effect, making you appear wider. Big and tall menswear is also about sticking with simple patterns, that appear to be timeless and flattering, making you feel more confident in yourself.
-
Pay Attention to Fabrics – I know shiny fabrics aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but IF you like your shiny clothes, bin them. They can emphasise body contours. A matte-style fabric will certainly be more flattering. Stretchy fabrics are definitely the type of fabric you want to load your wardrobe with. They are comfortable and look fashionable, too. If you are living in a hotter climate, choose linen, cotton or lightweight wool to keep you cool and comfortable. Take a look at this blog for more information on fabrics.
-
Invest in Good Proportions – Maybe it’s best to stay away from skinny and tight jeans, unless that’s your thing, then absolutely go for it! Longer shirts that are long enough to cover your torso is a good idea, as they will cover up the entire upper half of your body. Make sure you get the correct trouser length – don’t let the bottom of your trousers bunch up, as this breaks the clean line of your legs, and looks a little messy. If you are rocking a blazer, have it end around about mid-thigh length to give you that elongated, balanced look.
-
Prioritise Proper Fit – Try and find the balance between baggy and tight. Baggy can add unnecessary bulk, while tight-fitting clothes can highlight areas of your body you might not really want highlighted. Look for clothing in stores that fits you, and be sure that you feel happy and comfortable when trying clothes on. Don’t just buy them because you are bored of looking and are becoming frustrated with the process. Time and effort will definitely benefit you in this case. Another thing – jackets, coats, and blazers are clothes with clean lines, and these can give you that polished look with great shape.
Well, best of luck to you, men of the world. Clothes shopping isn’t something most of us look forward to, but with the right knowledge and information, we can create a look we feel happy and comfortable with, no matter our size. For more information where you are, take a look here.
