After a free VIN lookup, you know precisely what items your Honda Accord needs to thrive. This comes in handy when you ask yourself, “How long does an oil change take?”
If you are tired of waiting at a mechanic’s shop, then you can learn how to do it yourself and save a bunch of time and money. It is a useful skill and one that will benefit you for the rest of your life.
Get Everything You Need
Before you begin, you want to make sure you have all the supplies you need handy. These tools include:
- Carjack
- Carjack ramps
- Cleaning cloths
- Oil drip pan
- Motor oil
- 17mm wrench
- New oil filter
- Aluminum washer
- Filter wrench
Prepare Your Honda Accord for the Change
Using the car jack, lift up your Honda Accord. You can then drive your vehicle onto the car jack ramps. Make sure you use a brace to keep the car in place and that it does not roll backward.
From there, you can open the hood and remove the oil dipstick and oil filler cap. These will be found on either side of the car’s engine.
Now you can get your filter wrench, oil drip pan, cleaning cloths, drain plug wrench, new oil filter and washer.
All Honda cars will require a 17mm wrench for taking the drain plug out of its position. You can then slide underneath the vehicle to remove what you need to.
Change the Car’s Oil
Using the 17mm wrench, remove the drain plug. You want to get rid of it as quickly as possible and then let the oil drip into the pan for about 15 minutes.
You can clean off any remaining oil left on the car, and from there, you can replace the drain plug and washer. At this point, you should twist off the used oil filter using the filter wrench and dump any excess oil into the pan.
This is a good time to make sure your car’s components are working as they should. You should inspect the rubber gasket and the threads to ensure nothing looks broken.
Before you put the gasket back into place, you should coat it with a small amount of oil and then replace the filter. After this, you can refill your Honda Accord with the new motor oil.
You can read your owner’s manual to find out what type of oil works best for your car. After refilling it, you can start your car and let it run for a little while to build up the pressure.
Start Refilling Your Car’s Oil
With regular oil changes, your Honda Accord will continue running optimally for years to come. When you know how to replace oil on your own, you could end up saving hundreds of dollars over the years.
It is so much simpler when you can work on your car in your driveway rather than driving it somewhere else. Fortunately, you can obtain all of the supplies you need at a single, reputable auto shop near you. Before you know it, you will refill your car’s oil like a champ.
