Chino pants truly are charming. And that’s not only because they have one of the best cuts in trousers, bringing out a suave silhouette. It is also because of the fact that in the two centuries of their existence in men’s wardrobes, not once have they compromised on comfort.
And yes, you did read that right. Chino pants actually have been around for that long. Initially made for the military in the West as well as the East, these pants became a staple of civilian wardrobes and continue to be so. And all of it has to do with the comfort of the fabric and the way it is tailored. Because they were worn by the military, chino pants still tend to have earth tones like the ones found in the camouflage print.
Of course, they have a lot of variations today and can go with pretty much anything. But too many options can be a little confusing, especially when it comes to curating a balanced look for trousers with such a particular silhouette.
To make that simpler, we have curated five outfits where chinos are both the star and the anchor of the look

Outfit 1. Olive Chinos + White Graphic T-shirt + White Sneakers
The best thing about chinos is that you can dress them up or down, depending on your mood or the kind of day you are wearing it in. Let’s say you want to keep it fashionable and low-key, like the outfit here. Go for a plain white graphic tee, and tuck it into your chinos.
Make sure the chinos have a good color, like the olive one here. You can accessorize with a suave brown belt, a black bag and some shades and classic white sneakers. You can also make it more street-style with a bracelet and a belt chain.
Outfit 2. Navy Chinos + White Graphic T-shirt + White Sneakers
You know how runway models look so effortlessly chic on the streets during fashion week? Chinos can help you achieve that. Get a brand graphic tee with bold colors but an overall minimalistic pattern like the one in the outfit here, pair it with navy blue chinos and classic white sneakers, and you will have the perfect outfit.
To spruce it up, you can add a dark tote bag, and a cord belt in a matching color so that it looks great but also blends seamlessly into the rest of the outfit.
Outfit 3. Grey Chinos + Black Short Sleeve Shirt + White Sneakers
Can you work chinos into a business-casual outfit? Well, you can do pretty much anything with chinos. Notice how dapper and striking the black half-sleeve shirt looks in contrast with the grey chinos and the white sneakers? The shirt immediately adds a professional vibe to the outfit, but the sneakers keep it low-key.
Of course, grey itself is a standard formal color. So, if you are planning for something like this, make sure you choose two complimentary formal colors, such as the black and grey in this outfit. Finish the look with a utility bag, dark sunglasses, and a black belt.
Outfit 4. Beige Chinos + White Crew Neck T-shirt + White Sneakers
The best thing about chinos is the walkability of it, how easily the fabric moves with you. You would be missing out if you don’t style it for a stroll around the block. An outfit like the one you see here is super easy to assemble, and equally versatile.
Just make sure that the white tee is light-weight and somewhat loosely fitted to capture that summer vibe. Also, while the white sneakers are the standard with chinos, don’t be afraid to add a pop of color like the little red graphic on the shoes her. Add a handy tote, and you would ace the look.
Outfit 5. Navy Chinos + White T-shirt + Navy Overcoat + White Sneakers
This outfit has a really underhanded structure to it, which is precisely why it looks so cool and street-ready. First, the navy-blue overcoat dials up the charm of the overall look. It is both striking and comfortable. Two, the white t-shirt works as the subtlest part of whole look, keeping it grounded.
Three, the chinos are more relaxed in their fit, adding to the laidback appeal. And four, the pop of red in the sneakers adds just a touch of whimsy to the whole look. With minimal accessories and an understated rich color, this is a look for the fashion archives.
Outfit 6 - Beige Chinos + Olive green short-sleeve shirt + Beige hat
This one has a rather classic combination – an olive-green half sleeve shirt, a brown leather bag and the star of this article – the beige trousers. You will generally find a similar olive color in a lot of different fabrics, so, for this look, you should ideally go for a texture that works well with the texture of the pants.
If your trousers are more on the formal side, such as the one here, it is best to go with something that has a silkier finish. Also, if you want your shirt to look more fitted, you can fold the sleeves, but make sure that your sleeves have the same length of the fold on either side. Accessorize with a Panama hat, and classic cool shades.
Outfit 7 - Beige Chinos + Light blue full-sleeve shirt + Sunglasses
This particular outfit looks rather simple, with its understated color palette and charm – but it can be fairly tricky to style. To start with, denim shirts can go wrong when styled with beige trousers. The textures of the two fabrics are completely different.
But there are a few things that you can do to make sure you stand out in a good way with these looks. First, get a denim shirt in a lighter blue and a neater texture than the classic, vintage denims. You do not want a distressed denim shirt for this look either, because it can make the outfit too jarring. Also, go for a fitted shirt here, instead of a baggy one.
Outfit 8 - Beige Chinos + Blue printed Shirt + Navy Double-Brested Blazer + Black Bit Loafers
If you are big on experimenting with classic styles in a way that retains both the formality and the playfulness of the outfits – this one is for you. Double breasted jackets are an absolute treat to style. They are formal, they have a certain, unquestionable elan and if you are going for something in an ink blue shade like this one, it will work really well with your beige trousers.
The printed shirt is the trickiest part here, because you want it to show but you don’t want it to take all the attention. Style this with a classic grey fedora and simple pocket square, and you will have a perfect outfit.
Outfit 9 - Beige Chinos + Purple Vertical Stripe Short-Sleeve Shirt + Tan Loafers
This is another perfectly simple look, but like outfit no. 2, getting this right can be a bit of a trick. For starters, the contrast is very high in this one. There are four shades – the ink blue of the shirt, carnation red and white of the stripes, and of course, the beige trousers.
What you should do here, is keep the stripes neat and narrow. Go for a ticking stripe like the one here, which combines a slightly broader stripe in the middle with two narrow stripes on either side. You can go for a more relaxed fit with the shirt here.
Outfit 10 - Beige Chinos + White Shirt + Beige Blazer + Brown Suede Loafers
This one has the perfect balance of business-formal and fashion-forward. You want a look like this to make a statement with its understated color palette, so make sure that even if you go for contrasting colors, you do not go overboard with them.
A light lavender works really well as a contrasting shade to the beige of the suit, and the tie and the pocket square help break the monotony of the look.
Outfit 11 - Khaki Chinos + White Shirt + Black Denim Jacket + Grey Sneakers
This first outfit works as a great option for a day out, as well as an option for casual workwear, especially if you prefer laidback smart-formals. The chinos are in a classic camel tone, and this is a really fitted one – so the rest of your outfit will have to be aligned to its silhouette.
Pair this with a classic white shirt and match the white of the shirt with a pair of neutral light grey sneakers. Go for a dark grey denim jacket to complete the look, but don’t go for a really chunky jacket. Going for a lighter one keeps the look more within the smart-formals range.
Outfit 12 - Beige Chinos + Light Blue Vertical Stripe Casual Shirt + White Sneakers
This is another great option for a day out, and a really great outfit for a trip or even for sailing. The lighter, summery shades of the outfit make it perfect for the day, especially if you are in a hot and humid area. The off-white chinos are perfect for many other outfits, and folding the bottoms will give you a more structured look.
The white sneakers are great for walking around, but make sure you have a way to keep them clean. The light blue shirt is the star of this look. Keep the shirt crisp and fitted, and accessorize with a pair of dark shades and a simple watch to complete your look.
Outfit 13 - Khaki Chinos + Black T-shirt + Denim Jacket
We are getting into a more experimental combination with this one, but if you can pull it off – you will make a real impact with this look. There is an obvious grunge appeal to it, mostly because of the dark taupe chinos and the duffel bag.
The taupe chinos have a slightly shiny, reflective texture, so make sure you keep the rest of the colors matte so as to not overdo the shine. Pair the chinos with a classic black tee and a denim jacket. You can accessorize with some white sneakers to add some lightness to the look, and go for a simple silver strapped watch.
Outfit 14 - Black Chinos + White Crew Neck T-shirt + Black Leather Jacket
We cannot make a list of outfits featuring chinos and not include a classic black-and-white combination. Neutrals are a hit, almost always, and with colors as balanced as black and white – you cannot go wrong. Start with ankle-length chinos. These have a more relaxed fit than most of the other chinos we have featured here.
Pair this with a simple white tee and layer this with a sleek and suave black biker’s jacket. You can go for something with really minimalistic chains like the one here to keep the whole look minimalistic. Finish the look with a pair of grey penny loafers.
Outfit 15 - Light Blue Chinos + Black V-neck T-shirt + Black Leather Jacket
Here is another combination featuring a biker’s jacket that you can try out when styling your chinos. You do not always have to go for a pair of chinos that match directly with your jacket, you can go for a more unconventional choice of color.
The slate grey ones here complement the darker tones of the black biker’s jacket and the black tee, forming a very strong base for the rest of the look. Finish the look with white shoes and some dark shades. You can also add a handy black backpack to make this look more functional.
Outfit 16 - Khaki chinos + Beige graphic shirt + Brick red vans sneakers + Club master sunglasses
There is one playful item in this look, the graphic beige tee that adds a boyish charm to it. With graphic tees, the trick is to know what you are going for precisely, so that you do not go overboard with the styling. A minimalistic, but bold graphic like this is a pretty safe bet.
Of course, the khaki chinos anchor the whole look. The sienna brown vans sneakers add a pop of color to the outfit, while complementing the colors in the graphic. Style this with a silver-strapped watch and club master sunglasses to complete the look. The watch and the sunglasses will help add more sophistication to this look, hitting a great balance with its other playful elements.
Outfit 17 - Kahki chinos + Green button down shirt + Brown leather shoes + Brown leather belt + Round aviator sunglasses
The other way to style khaki chinos is with a formal, button-down shirt. The forest green color of the formal shirt adds a phenomenal contrast to the khaki shade, but it also looks very concerted, because both of these earth tones. The dark brown of the belt matches with the dark brown of the shoes.
Style this with aviator sunglasses with a metallic rim to complete the outfit. A look like this would be worn mostly around the winters, because of the darker shades of the palette. But you can very easily wear it across summers and autumns. For summers, pick a shirt that has a slightly more relaxed fit than the one here.
Outfit 18 - Kahki chinos + Maroon button down shirt + Brown leather shoes + Brown leather belt
The other color that complements khaki extremely well is oxblood. The oxblood button-down shirt adds just a touch of formality to the look, while the overall color palette remains very earthy and moody. Again, the outfit creates a balance with the brown shoes and the brown belt.
A look like this is perfect for autumn, and can be worn around the clock. Of course, the whole outfit here has very snug fit, like the previous one. So go for really comfortable fabrics for each of the element if you want the look to have a considerable degree of flexibility.
Outfit 19 - Kahki chinos + Chocolate brown polo shirt + Black leather shoes + Black leather belt
For a sportier look, go for a polo-neck tee – especially in a darker tone like the black one here. There’s a minimalistic white stripe detail at the collar and the sleeves, but it does not interfere with the overall tonality of the look.
The other details here – the black leather shoes that complement the black tee and the silver watch, work wonderfully with the whole look – adding a smart, sophisticated appeal to it. This is a more summery look, of course. But you can very easily wear it during the autumns or in light winters with the addition of a few layers.
Outfit 20 - Khaki chinos + Grey sweater + Converse sneakers + Brown club masters
This is a classic winter outfit. The fitted grey crewneck sweater has a very seamless weave, with only a slight hint of texture. So, it adds a neatness to the overall look. The chinos have an earthier tone, compared to the neutral tone of the sweater, but the contrast works because both colors are muted.
You can complete this look with grey converse sneakers, a dark brown belt, a silver watch and brown club master shades. This one can also be worn around the clock, so make sure that you go for comfier fabrics, especially that of the wool of the sweater, so that you can wear it throughout the day.
