The World’s Most Expensive Suit Hanger: Nakata NH-2

Most Expensive Suit Hanger

The best clothes need the best home. The finest hangers in the world are made in Japan by Nakata, as they are specially carved to shape from a single block of wood. But the world’s finest hanger comes at a cost. The flagship, Nakata NH-2, is priced at £242.

Sartorial enthusiasts know well that clothes could be easily damaged if the right hanger is not sought. After all, a hanger needs to follow the natural curvature of a person’s neck and shoulders to prevent the fabric from stretching or the shoulders from dimpling. Nakata offers beautifully hand-carved wood hangers and each piece can be personalised by laser engraving to clientele.   They are found in some of the Savile Row houses.

In a league of its own, the Nakata NH-2 hanger is made with the highest artisanal quality. Japanese are known for their love of artistry and meticulous attention to detail. It comes as no surprise that the Nakata hanger is award-winning and recognised for its craftsmanship. It is painstakingly hand-carved from a single block of European beechwood, meaning there are no joints. No two pieces of wood were joined together as it uses only a single solid block of wood, this is a sign of premium craftsmanship. Its elegant curves that mimic the shape of a human’s shoulders and neck are the result of specialty woodwork, whittled free-hand.

The hangers are, then, hand-planed using a traditional Japanese tool called the Nankin-kanna. It is said that the longer the wood shavings, the more experienced the craftsman.

Called the “Rolls Royce” of hangers, the Nakata NH-2 hanger features a trench design, where its collar flawlessly arches to a trench-like form. This curve holds the collar of a suit jacket gracefully and keeps the hanger stable as it holds heavy coats and trousers. The sophisticated shape and design of this hanger are complemented by the wood colour. The deep smokey brown shows off the natural grain of the beech, which is then topped by a white bronze hook. It is an elegant accessory that will hold your investment pieces in style.

From the amount of work to craft the NH-2, it is no surprise that it is amongst the most expensive hanger in the world. The little brothers, such as the AUT-03 and AUT-05 are priced more affordably at £78 and £38 each, respectively. The full Nakata collection is available at Arterton London (exclusive distributors).
