Contemporary formal events and occasions tend not to adhere to the more traditional dress codes of the past. The days of mandatory tailcoats for men at the Opera are long gone! But that doesn’t mean style and finesse are out of fashion, read on for ways to ensure you’re dressed to impress no matter what the occasion.
What you should wear to an entertainment event depends mostly on what time of day it is and whether a formal dress code is specified. Most events will expect you to wear White Tie (Full tuxedo) Black Tie (also known as ‘Evening Wear’) or Business/Business Casual (the more relaxed of the categories).
If you have been invited to an evening event, such as the opening of an exhibition or a premiere at a theatre, a well-cut double-breasted suit in dark colours will serve you well and can be worn on numerous occasions.
A trip with the boys to a casino requires a slightly different look. Most casinos in the US don’t have any rules regarding the attire of its clientele, but European casinos like the key venue for the upcoming PokerStars Championships in Casino Barcelona, ask that its customers wear ‘Business Casual’ dress. Pair the dark colours and clean cuts of the look below with some stylish accessories like a statement watch, and you’ll have no trouble getting a seat at the card tables during the day.
For the evening, we suggest a two-piece suit with plain, lace-up shoes and a block-coloured shirt. A suit that’s custom made is even better! Don’t be afraid to experiment with patterns, either, a well-cut pinstripe can look especially cool and doesn’t have to be restricted to the office.
Weddings & Ceremonies
When dressing for a wedding or other formal ceremonies such as a Christening, Name Day or Bar Mitzvah to be led by what the invitation says and the time of year the event is held. If Black Tie is requested, then a wool dinner jacket in black or midnight blue is ideal. Add in a plain shirt front for a cleaner look, or a classic Marcella shirt for something more traditional. And don’t forget the cufflinks! Outfits for winter and autumn ceremonies need darker colours and heavier fabrics.
Spring/Summer or daytime occasions require a lighter look. A coloured fabric in a narrow fit contrasting shirt and shoes shows that you have made an effort, but also gives you the freedom to experiment with bolder colours and silhouettes.
